Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away in a tragic way, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner to help them survive. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. However, she left school after just two years of school to take on a acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges and in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. There, she made the ends meet by working by working as an usher in the morning, while at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
